Collectors, We had an Great Time!

The annual convention of the Fisher-Price Collectors Club was held over the weekend of July 25 - 26, 2014. As usual, we had a great time! We had some members whom we haven't seen in a decade come to visit, as well as some families of brand new members. We had many regulars, and it was awesome to see everyone. Read on down for more details of Convention 2014!

What Went On at Convention 2014

The Fisher-Price Collectors Club held our annual convention on Friday July 25th, and Saturday July 26, 2014. As in prior years, the convention was planned around the weekend of the East Aurora Chamber of Commerce's Street and Sidewalk Festival. Our toy sale is a proud part of the festival in celebrating East Aurora and the town's toy history. We kept the schedule very similar to prior years - with a social hour, sit-down dinner, and of course a vintage and collectible toy sale! We had a nice turnout this year, with a bonus of seeing some members who we haven't visited in years. We also had some club members who used to work at the Fisher-Price factory come this year with their families - wow the knowledge and stories they can share! We had many regulars as well as new faces too! Overall the weekend went very well, and the club hopes to hold the next convention in 2015 during the same weekend next July.

For club members, The Fall 2014 issue of the Gabby Goose newsletter (being mailed out to all club members in November) contains a full write-up plus pages of photos from Convention 2014.

Annual Dinner Summary:

The annual club dinner was held on Friday July 25 in a new place this year - the American Legion Hall in East Aurora. Our old place (the Village Kitchen Restaurant) closed and will become a Mexican restaurant (not open yet), so the club had to find a new place. The American Legion Hall was a natural choice since the club used to hold swap meets here, so many club members are very familiar with it. So what went on at the dinner? The usual - lots of gabbing! We gabbed about our toys, toy collections, favorite flea market/rummage finds, toy displays, our family and kids and grandkids, what everyone has been up to, you name it! We had door prizes, plus raffle prizes, and one member made some home-made Fisher-Price themed goodie bags for everyone as well! Our food was served buffet-style, with the standard offerings available. Our activity of the evening was a Little-People themed word puzzle competition, with the top 2 quickest finishers winning prizes! Even after we had our winners, everyone kept at the puzzle until most solved it - yes what dedicated collectors we are! Overall the dinner was very nice, and we were glad our new location worked well for 2014!

Toy Show and Sale Summary:

The annual Toy Show and Sale was held on Saturday July 26, as part of the East Aurora Street and Sidewalk Sale at the Immanuel Lutheran Church (slightly off of Main Street, just a walk across the parking lot behind Vidlers Store). We had more vendors this year, with around 10 participating. We had some new vendors, plus some long-time club members selling for the first time in 10 years! As usual, we had a big rush as opening with many dedicated Fisher-Price fans coming to buy their favorite toys. We had some shoppers come from many states away, with a group coming from Idaho even! We had two sellers selling tons of classic Little People figures, parts, sets, boxed sets - you name it! Many wooden pull toys for sale, plus other vintage toy collectibles. Also Adventure People, Chunky Little People, some newer Little People (not much but some), wooden puzzles, Great Adventures, dolls, - you never know what pops up for sale! The club raffled off our toy this year, Jingles the Elephant, which was won by a club member who couldn't attend this year (yes, you don't have to be present to win!)

After the initial rush, the sale had pretty decent foot traffic throughout the day. Many people commented that we never seen so many families with strollers come through, which is great! We also heard many shoppers exclaim the phrase "WOW I had that as a kid!" when looking at the vintage toys for sale! Overall the sale did well, and if the "Fisher-Price gods" smile upon us, we hope to hold a sale next July as well. Lots goes into planning the sale - booking the place, finding enough vendors, advertising, etc. - so hopefully things will fall into place in 2015!
